Biography

Huybert was born before 1726. He is the son of Gerrit Van Wagenen and Theuntje Vandenbergh. [1]

In 1743 he taught catechetical instruction to the children in the old church on Garden Street. In 1756 he received an additional ten pounds for being the chorister both in the old and the new church. He resigned from his school in 1749.[2]

From about 1750 until he died in 1806, he lived at No. 5 Beekman slip (in 1884 Fulton street). He started a hardware business which he first ran by himself and then later with his son Gerrit.[3]

He married Anginetje Vredenburg on 12 March 1752 at the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church.[4]. Their children are Gerrit [5], Willem [6], Willemÿntje [7], Willemÿntje [8], Teúntje [9], Agnietje [10], Teúntje [11], and Marÿtje [12].

At the church in New York Húÿbert and/or his wife, Angenietje, witnessed the baptisms of her sister, Cornelia Vredenbúrg [13], their niece, Teúntje Vredenbúrg [14], Johannes Broúwer [15], and their niece, Willemÿntje Vredenbúrg [16].

In 1767 he signed the remonstrance to the Consistory of the Dutch Church against Dr. Laidlie preaching in English in the Dutch Church. When this remonstrance failed, he withdrew and joined the English Church.[17]

He later married Dorothy Lewis in New York on 28 October 1773.[18]

From New York During the Revolution it states, "In Beekman slip, near Queen street, was the extensive hardware store of Huybert Van Wagenen, whose sign of a golden broad axe was so often referred t in the annals of the period."[19]

When the British were approaching New York in 1776, he went to New Brunswick, New Jersey, with his family, but returned to New York in May, 1777, to run his hardware store.[20]

He was an alderman of the Montgomery ward from 1768 to 1772. He was vestryman of Trinity Church from 1787 to 1806. [21]

He died on 25 January 1806.[22]He was buried in his family vault outside of St. George's Chapel on Beekman Street. in March 1866 his great grandsons, Gerrit Hubert and John Richard Van Wagenen moved his remains to Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.[23]
